Hi, my name is Betsey Fiddler
Many in the Chicago community know me as “The Mezuzah Lady.” For years, I visited schools, synagogues, and homes to lead mezuzah-making workshops with children. My work has been featured in the Spurtas Museum, Blue Moon Gallery, and for over 20 years, I’ve been a mainstay at the Great Chicago Jewish Festival. My mezuzot once adorned every doorway at Solomon Schechter Day School in Skokie. Custom commissions of mine can now be found in Jewish homes across the country.
My evolution as a ceramic artist parallels my own journey into Judaism. I grew up in a small town in Indiana, always sensing a kind of emptiness I couldn’t quite name. At nineteen, I visited my sister in Chicago—and moved there within the year. It was my first true exposure to Judaism. I was instantly drawn in. As I learned more, my connection to HaShem deepened. After two years of study, I made an Orthodox conversion. That dull ache I’d carried for so long was finally soothed. I felt like my real life had just begun.
Two years later, I married my husband Joe. Together we raised four children. Today, I’m a proud grandmother of seven—with more on the way.
As my life continues to blossom with HaShem’s blessings, so does my artistic practice. I began with humble polymer clay. Today, I work primarily with stoneware and porcelain, using a broad range of wheel-throwing, hand-building, glazing, and firing techniques.
